“Subtle and tailored” is the way Canadian House & Home described the “New Global” trend for 2011. Moving away from the wildly eclectic decor we’ve seen in the past, we are going to see a more elegant approach to the look.
You can channel Moroccan vibes with items like carved screens, perforated-metal lanterns and leather poufs. Leggy chairs, African artwork, natural woods, and Asian-inspired furniture can be combined with subtle accents to achieve today’s contemporary global decor.
Here is my take on the look…
For those who may not have the luxury of globe-trotting to amass worldly items, you could make a trip over to Anthropologie (in person or online) to buy yourself some exotic decor. They have a number of great ethnic-inspired lines this season, including really gorgeous bedding and rugs.
This concludes my five part interpretation of H&H’s Top Trends of 2011. Let’s sit back and see how the predictions play out….

For homework this week, I am focusing on what Canadian House & Home coins the ‘New Vintage’. This so-called look makes it OK to mix your flea market finds (read: lovingly scratched and dented wood furniture), handcrafted accessories, intentionally faded upholstery, and florals, florals, florals in one room.
Just make sure to mix in some decoupage or silhouette artwork to add a mod punch.
The look is forgiving, so tattered edges and distressed materials only add to the confidence your room will exude.

It’s the time of year when all the shelter magazines are making their annual predictions for the hot upcoming trends. Will they be on point or totally out there? I was particularly excited to peruse the January 2011 issue of Canadian House & Home, one of my favourite monthly mags. Their thoughts on next year’s hottest trends are summed up in five looks that I believe are very representative of what’s going on in interior design: (1) The New Modern – soft & layered, (2) The New Vintage – edgy & focused, (3) The New Country – sleek & artisanal, (4) The New Traditional – bold & exotic, (5) The New Global – subtle & tailored.
Over the next five weeks I am going to assign myself some homework and take a stab at designing a room using Canadian H&H’s definitions as my guideline.
This week I will start with The New Modern - soft & layered. Characteristics of the classic modern style with a softened cosy twist include: luxurious textiles like velvet, faux fur, leather, and sisal; collections of well-curated books, plants, and objects; timeless modern furniture; white walls; hand-thrown pottery; ample pillows; tufted upholstery; lots of wood; hits of silvery blue; warm earthy tones.
