white & bright week- reality check

I hope I’ve dazzled you all week with beautiful images of beautiful, bright, white spaces -so gorgeous and inspiring.

White expands the space, it creates the sense of having no boundaries. White makes a strong foundation.” (Vincente Wolfe)

White provides a gallery-like backdrop for you to display your art, it highlights architectural details, it reflects light to make a small room feel larger, it can unify an eclectic mix of furniture, and it provides an uncluttered look to calm a space.

But it is time for a reality check – Is white achievable for everyone?

Sadly, the answer is….no.

You may have noticed one common theme this week – most of the spaces had huge, un-adorned windows that provide tons of natural light.  If your space is lacking ample natural light, white walls may look downright dingy.

Do you have kids? Dogs? You may want to think twice about going all-white, as things are bound to get messy pretty quick. Still, if you are willing to give this look a try, think about using white materials that are easily cleaned – white tiles in the kitchen and bathroom, semi-gloss white on the walls,  white slipcovers over furniture, and good quality white bedding that can be bleached again and again.

white & bright week- living rooms

In case you’re just joining in, this week I am featuring all that is white and bright.  White can suit any style, whether it be stark modern, shabby chic, elegant traditional, or an eclectic mix of old & new. White can also brighten a space and make a small room feel larger.  Personally, I like the fresh feeling a white room exudes.

Loving the high contrast between black and white. Not  to mention that rug and accent table!

White combined with pastels create a soft pretty look:

You might not guess, but this is IKEA:

Crisp and contemporary – love the painted brick wall and shelving flanking the fireplace:

Finally, the lovely white living room of Keri Russell (oh, how Felicity has grown up!):

white & bright week- nurseries & kids rooms

If you already have white walls and white furniture, don’t stress over which colour to paint the walls in your child’s room or nursery -consider keeping the room fresh and bright with white.  Neutral doesn’t mean the room will be blah.  As a matter of fact, white is a fantastic backdrop for a rainbow of colour and loads of personality.

How stimulating!

white & bright week – bedroom

Since it’s the first full week of May and Mr.Weatherman is calling for sunshine for the next four days, I’ve decided to piggyback on the ‘white & bright’ theme from yesterday – all my posts this week will be dedicated to bright, fresh, airy, WHITE spaces.

How can you achieve a similar look?  Freshen things up for summer with a few fresh hits of white on white, white on grey, or white on natural wood.  Here are a few inexpensive items to consider:

Bedding – Parachute duvet cover & shams, ($99 Queen size) West Elm

Throw – OFELIA throw, ($24.99) IKEA

Frames – RIBBA, (starting at $4.99) IKEA

Rug – Island cream chevron rug, ($249 4×6) Crate & Barrel

[room of the week] white & bright

The sun is shining and it’s heating up outside (finally!), so I couldn’t help but be drawn to this image – - white, bright, and lovely.  A wonderful mix of modern and vintage.

Hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

[room of the week] pure style bedroom

I love this bedroom by Lauren Liess.  What is so great about this Room of the Week? White on white, just enough brass accents, chic chandelier, sisal carpet, casual bedding, perfect body/accent pillow, cute dog, and she keeps it real with Ikea side tables and a West Elm duvet. Whole room decorated for under $1000.

Can you see yourself lazing around on this bed on a sunny weekend afternoon?

You should see the ‘Before’ picture of this bedroom – total ’70s, paneling, and very uninspiring. In fact, you should take a peek at all the ‘Before’ and ‘After’ pictures of her lovely home.  This girl has serious talent.

more white kitchen inspiration

I continuously save inspirational photos of kitchens I love.  And usually, those are white kitchens.  You may recall from my last kitchen post, I am enamored with the clean and classic look of the white kitchen.  Today I am sharing a few of my recent finds which are mostly white but there are a few new elements thrown in.  Take a look!

Absolutely love the white on white. Understated but elegant chandelier. Contrasting wooden stools.

This looks like a comfortable family kitchen. I especially love the modern lines of the island to contrast the traditional white cabinetry.  I’m not sold on the cream back splash and paint, I would prefer to see white subway tile or marble.

Simple but lovely pendants over the island.  Amazing dark floors to ground the space (what is that wood?!).  Love that marble back splash.

This back splash uses marble tiles. Less $$ than the solid sheets but just as much style.  The lower cabinetry is looking good in grey.

And finally, moving away from all white I had to include Tommy Smythe’s kitchen. The black lowers and trim are working for me.  I usually gravitate towards wood flooring but this herringbone tile looks fantastic in this kitchen.

elements for the perfect white kitchen

White kitchens – they get me every time.  My ideal kitchen would be a mix of contemporary and traditional elements to create a bright, airy, casual, and inviting atmosphere. To achieve this I would include a combination of: white cabinetry, carrera marble or white subway tile back splash, hardwood floors, large functional island with pull-up seating, and industrial or bare bulb pendants.

Here is a sampling of kitchens I am drawn to….

Love the contrasting espresso trim and height of the upper cabinetry. Beautiful glass pendants. However I find the chairs a little too matchy-matchy with the rest of the room. I’d like to see something a bit more casual, such as these ones below.

Crisp, clean, classic back splash. Amazing floors. Great mix of traditional, contemporary, and rustic.

Love the huge range cover with shelf.  But I am wondering about those chairs – do the homeowners have toothpicks for thighs?

Great industrial pendants. The dark counter tops add some weight to balance that huge centre island. Love all the natural wood.

Perhaps a bit too country for my taste, but I do like the ceiling and cabinetry.

Definitely a feminine kitchen. The soft wallpaper is a nice alternative to white walls.  I like the upper display cabinets.

More modern than the others but the carrera marble back splash adds texture and depth to the otherwise sleek look.  The bare bulb pendants add warmth and style.

Another great mix of styles – modern cabinets, rustic floors, traditional lighting, contemporary furniture.

And I just had to include this teeny tiny white kitchen. Apparently size doesn’t limit style and function!
